The time frame of a divorce case can vary greatly from case to case. It will depend on the type of case you have, whether you have minor children, whether you decide to file a collaborative divorce or a traditional divorce, and the complexity of the issues involved. Generally speaking, this can range anywhere from 60 days to one year from the date of the initial filing but your case is unique and you should discuss this further with your attorney.
The cost of your divorce is highly dependent on you and your spouse and the complexity of your case. I usually tell my clients that the better you and your spouse are able to work together with your attorneys to come to agreements, the less your divorce is going to cost. Generally speaking, the cases with the most contested litigation are going to cost the most. It is nearly impossible for your attorney to tell you right up front how much your divorce will cost but asking about cost and how you are billed and what to expect are really good questions to ask during your initial consultation. Ensure that you understand the billing process so that there is no confusion or frustration on your end.
Hire an attorney that you trust. Someone that is going to not only advocate for you, but also educate you and be honest and upfront with you. It is not helpful to hire a professional that will only tell you what you want to hear. You are going to spend a lot of money and end up disappointed and angry. Hire someone with experience with Family Law, and listen to their advice. There are no winners or losers in this area of law. It is difficult at the best of times. Be prepared and gain knowledge and understanding of your situation and what the possible outcomes might be.
How much child and or spousal support is ordered in your case is extremely case specific. As tempting as it might be to ask friends or family members what they paid or received in their cases, it is probably not going to be helpful for you. This is question to ask your attorney for insight on how these numbers might be calculated.
